Inpatient Medical-Surgical Oncology Unit
Morristown Memorial’s 43-bed inpatient oncology unit specializes in caring for patients with cancer. The staff is specifically trained to meet the complex physical and psychosocial needs of oncology patients and their families and friends. Patients include people who are receiving chemotherapy, blood transfusions, antibiotic therapy, and nutritional support, as well as pain and/or symptom management, postoperative care and palliative care. Oncology certified nurses employ a holistic approach to each patient, based on the latest clinical research and on well-founded methodologies. Our oncology clinical nurse specialist maintains our high standards of nursing care by keeping the staff up-to- date on new therapies, monitoring outcomes and providing resources to our physicians, patients and the families we serve. Our oncology certified pharmacist is available for questions, guidance and resource to the staff and physicians. Every member of our oncology nursing staff participates in a 10-week guided orientation to the oncology unit developed by the American Nurses’ Association and Oncology Nursing Society. Oncology nurses also attend an intensive two-day chemotherapy administration course. Our nurse staff members are encouraged and supported in their efforts to obtain certification in oncology nursing. The inpatient oncology unit team includes a full-time oncology social worker who provides psychosocial support, financial guidance and short- or long- term placement where and when needed. Our case manager coordinates discharge needs and works closely with the whole team, participating in planning and identifying resources. Certified nutritionists and physical and occupational therapists are also available to assist with medical clinical interventions. We recognize the importance of the spiritual needs of each person with the diagnosis of cancer and we offer complementary therapies such as music therapy, therapeutic touch, and a dedicated “family room” equipped with television, VCR, CDs, videos and refreshments. Our patient liaison makes daily visits to each patient to assure we are meeting all of your needs. For more information, please call 973-971-5034. |
