Diagnostic Services

Early detection and diagnosis are vital to the success of any cancer treatment. The Carol G. Simon Cancer Center employs the latest technologies to accurately diagnose and stage all cancers including:

  • PET/CT scan - A hybrid, noninvasive scanning device that allows radiologists to pinpoint the location of tumors, nodules and other abnormal tissue.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) - Detects cancer in the brain, spinal cord or in the muscular soft tissue.
  • Low-dose mammography - Detects small cancers of the breast before they can be felt on physical examination.
  • Ultrasound - Evaluates breast abnormalities by revealing information about the shape, texture, and composition of tumors and cysts.
  • Nuclear medicine - Provides unique information about both the structure and the function of major organ systems within the body.
  • Angiography - A radiographic technique used to visualize blood vessels that can reveal whether or not the cancer has spread to other organs via the blood vessels.
  • Advanced breast biopsy unit - Removes breast tissue for examination.
  • Pathology - Board-certified pathologists work with surgeons during and after surgery to analyze tissue in order to detect malignancies.
  • Cytogenetics laboratory - Studies the genetic blueprint of a tumor cell in order to understand how it is likely to grow, allowing us to customize treatment plans.
  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS): combines endoscopy and ultrasound technologies to obtain high-quality images of organs, and more accurately discovers and stages cancers of the esophagus, lung, stomach, pancreas, bile duct and rectum.
