Gastrointestinal Panel
The Gastrointestinal (GI) Oncology Team at the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center manages patients with all types of GI tumors, including esophageal, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectal, liver and pancreatic cancers.
Our treatment approach is comprehensive. A multidisciplinary team gathers input from a variety of diagnostic procedures to provide the most accurate diagnosis and treatment. Cases are discussed at our GI Tumor Board, and appropriate recommendations are made. Additional consultations are available from radiology, pathology, dietary and other allied health care specialties when needed. Our highly experienced staff provides patients with the best available treatment in a sensitive and caring atmosphere, complete with patient/family education and support.
Program highlights:
- Surgical oncologists with extensive experience with cancers of the esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, colon and rectum
- Minimally invasive surgical alternatives are available in many areas of GI tract surgery
- Total proctocolectomy, J-pouch, and coloanal reconstructions for rectal cancer
- Neoadjuvant therapy (chemotherapy and radiation therapy prior to surgery) in colorectal, esophageal, liver and pancreatic malignancies encourages significant reductions in tumor volume, allowing initially unresectable cancers to become resectable, and providing improvements in survival and cancer control
- State-of-the-art surgical techniques including advanced laparoscopy, radiofrequency ablation (used for primary and metastatic liver tumors) and placement of hepatic artery infusion pumps (to deliver concentrated chemotherapy to the liver)
- Pathological diagnosis of unusual gastrointestinal tumors
- GI radiologists highly skilled in the interpretation of ultrasound, CT MRI and PET Scan imaging for gastrointestinal tumors
- Physicians involved in many local, regional and national research protocols, making those trials available to our patients
